Join us for a staging of Peter Arnott’s translation of “Oedipus at Colonus” - the middle play in Sophocles’ Theban Trilogy. Sophocles returns to his most famous character Oedipus - transforming him from an exiled immigrant to a suppliant who bestows gifts on legendary King Theseus and Athens. In Oedipus Rex, Oedipus is a man ruined by his fate. In Colonus, he regains his agency, choosing who receives his blessing (Athens) and who receives his wrath (Thebes and his sons). Peter’s line-by-line translation, complete with all the chorus odes, gives the fullest immersion in this masterpiece about redemption, immigration, truth, murder, and death. Written late in Sophocles’ life, “Oedipus at Colonus” benefits from a lifetime of accumulated wisdom, which may explain why it is considered the crowning achievement of Greek drama.
